Born and raised in Plainfield NJ, Elder Alfred Quarles Jr. was baptized at the age of 9 years old and received the gift of the Holy Ghost at the age of 19. He first served the Lord at the Refuge Church of Christ located in Scotch Plains, New Jersey under the leadership of the late Bishop Robert Grayer. With the prayers of his mother and father, Elder Quarles served faithfully as a brother for Christ.
His legacy was then passed on to his son Elder Michael Grayer. Elder Quarles was appointed a Deacon, a Minister, an Elder, and then Assistant Pastor. These positions were appointed by Bishop Michael Grayer. While being in those positions, he functioned in many choirs. In 1996, after many years of devotion and dedicated service, Bishop Grayer went on to meet the Lord.
Elder Quarles became interim pastor of Refuge Church of Christ for a short time. During the 1997 International Convocation, Elder Quarles was appointed pastor of Grace Church where he began to carry on the vision that the late Bishop Grayer established.
